You have just started your journey in the skincare world and you already feel confused and overwhelmed. Products, routines, advice are floating around. Routines with several steps that you don’t even have the time to follow, are recommended.
In this post, I’ll share simple, effective skincare tips specifically for beginners—because taking care of your skin shouldn’t be that complicated. Let’s break it down.
Things are simple. You basically need to cleanse, moisturize, exfoliate and use sunscreen.
A gentle cleanser is recommended if you want to maintain a healthy skin. Harsh cleansers strip skin of its natural oils. This will lead to dryness and irritation. The skin may try to restore the balance, will produce more oils and this can lead to breakouts.
You can also do double cleansing first with an oil-based cleanser that will eliminate all the oil-based products such as sunscreen, makeup and dirt. It has to be followed by a water-based mild cleanser.
Use to a toner without alcohol to rebalance your skin’s pH. It removes the cleanser leftovers as well as impurities that they were not eliminated by the cleanser, hydrates the skin preparing it to absorb the serum and the cream.
Moisturize and nourish. If you want to apply a Hyaluronic Acid serum this must be done on a damp skin. HA needs to attract water, it is actually a hydrophilic molecule. Generally, the water comes from the air but if you live in an area with a dry climate will also take water from the deeper layers of the skin. However, HA acid is not enough. A moisturizing cream is essential. If you don’t want to buy a serum and a cream, choose a good hydrating and nourishing cream. In this way, you skip a step.
Use sunscreen SPF50 daily even when it is cloudy. UV rays penetrate even the clouds. Part of the UV radiation is blocked but not totally.
Exfoliate. Once a week is enough. You won’t get a better skin texture if you overdo, on the contrary, you will compromise your skin barrier and your skin will be dehydrated, irritated, more sun sensitive, you will exacerbate existing skin conditions and you will finally get a dull appearance of your skin. Apply a lip balm to protect your lips and heal them if they are chapped or cracked.
You may also use an eye cream to treat the fragile and sensitive eye area.
Additional steps (if needed or wanted)
You may decide to use a Vitamin C serum. It is a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from the free radicals (oxidative stress). It is also a tyrosinase inhibitor, the enzyme that plays the main role in the melanin production. Therefore, it can reduce the melanin production and act against dark spots. Preferably use the vitamin C serum in the morning in order to enhance your sunscreen’s performance. If you have skin issues such as acne, eczema, rosacea, don’t ask questions here and there. You should better consult a dermatologist before applying any active substances.
You may decide to use a serum with anti-aging properties but give it time to work. You won’t see positive results in a short time. You can use a peptide serum. The rule here is that if you apply vitamin C in the morning, don’t apply the peptides serum next. Leave it for the night routine. The acidic pH of the vitamin C will make the peptides ineffective. Here is my post about the use of peptides in skincare https://www.christiannak.com/?p=829
In case that you decide to use retinoids, always moisturize your skin. You can do it before and after applying the retinoid. Moreover, you should introduce it slowly, at a lower concentration to avoid irritation and inflammation. Retinoids are irritating substances. Once your skin seems to be adjusted to the new substance, you may gradually increase the frequency of use but not the concentration. You can do that later. This is my post about the use of retinoids https://www.christiannak.com/?p=1698
Precautions
Always do a patch test to see if you have some allergic reaction or if the product causes irritation and sensitivity.
Under no circumstances should you introduce different active ingredients into your routine at the same time. You can cause inflammation and irritation of your skin. You need always give your skin the time to adjust to the new substance.
Be gentle to your skin, don’t rub it or stretch it while applying the products.
Be consistent to your routine, don’t change frequently the products you use, give them the time to see if they work, don’t add every new product you see on social media. Overuse of skincare products may ruin your skin barrier.
Take a break from the active ingredients once in a week. Just moisturize and wear sunscreen if you go out.
The bottom line: A skincare routine doesn’t need to be complicated. It has to be tailored to your skin’s needs. A simpler approach could be more effective than a complicated one that it is generally more stressful. A simplified skincare routine is the best way to protect your skin barrier.
