THE REASONS YOU SHOULD BECOME YOUR OWN SKIN EXPERT
You are overwhelmed by the number of cosmetic products flooding the market. New brands, new products that make it difficult to choose the right ones for you.
You want to have a basic skincare routine but you don’t know where to begin.
You are confused by the videos on social media. You are constantly exposed to new trends that may be misleading even harmful to your skin.
You are sick and tired of all those cosmetic products that promise miracles and do a little bit of everything, anti-aging, hydration, exfoliation and I don’t know what else. I am not saying they will not work. What I am saying is that when you apply to your skin several skincare products in a multi-step skincare routine, you risk to render the active ingredients ineffective. Moreover, you increase the risk of irritation or inflammation of the skin.
You need a skincare routine that is backed by science.
Multi-steps skincare routine is boring. You may not have the time for it.
You no longer want to spend your money exclusively on beauty products.
For all the above reasons and perhaps others that I haven’t thought of, it is absolutely necessary to become your own skin expert.
THE ESSENTIAL STEPS
Understand your skin type (oily, combination, dry or sensitive) to choose the right products accordingly. You need a personalized skincare routine. There is no one-size-fits-all approach.
Try to learn as much as you can about the active substances in skincare products, the pH required for them to be effective, the minimum concentration needed to give results.
Always do a patch test before you introduce a new active ingredient to your skincare routine.
Always read the ingredients list of a product and search information about the way it works.
In case that you have to deal with dermatological issues such as acne, dermatitis, rosacea or hyperpigmentation, seek professional advice. A dermatologist can help you.
If you are a beginner, start with the basic steps. Cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize and sun protection. Try as much as you can to avoid buying more moisturizing products that lead to multi-step routines. A good moisturizer is enough. This will save you time and money in the long run.
When you introduce new active substances to your skincare, do it gradually and with caution. Never overestimate the tolerance levels of your skin. It may be more sensitive than you assume.
Address a skin issue as soon as it occurs and before it gets worse. For example, if you weren’t careful with the sun exposure and you notice dark spots, you should treat them immediately. Consult with a dermatologist.
Assuming you’ve already found the beauty routine that suits you, give the active ingredients time to show what they can do. Don’t change products constantly and don’t add more products without any reason. However, if a cosmetic product causes irritation or inflammation to your skin, try first to reduce the frequency of use to see how your skin will react. If symptoms persist, this product is not for you. You need to discontinue the use.
Consistency in your skincare is of primary importance.
Last but not least, a healthy dietary regimen is an essential complement to a good skincare routine.
The bottom line: Becoming your own skincare expert is achievable. Simple steps are involved in this process. The most important is not to be influenced by products advertisements and dubious tactics you me say see on social media. Stay consistent with the routine you chose.
