WHAT IS, HOW TO USE, PRECAUTIONS, SIDE EFFECTS

Tranexamic acid (TXA) was initially used as a medicine to help blood clot. However, there was some evidence that it can treat hyperpigmentation, fade dark spots and give the skin a more even tone. It may also reduce sun damage, age spots as well as discoloration due to acne. Therefore, it gained a place in the field of skincare although it doesn’t seem to be very popular comparing to other active substances.
How it works
TXA inhibits pigment production in melanocytes. It actually reduces the action of tyrosinase the enzyme catalyst for melanin production.
Precautions
It is generally considered safe and well-tolerated by most skin types. However, if you have sensitive skin you should be cautious as you should do with any other active substance. If you have skin problems it would be better to consult a dermatologist.
If you already use other brightening ingredients such as niacinamide, vitamin C, a-arbutin, kojic acid, azelaic and glycolic acid, you need also to proceed with caution. You shouldn’t combine all of them because you don’t want a damaged skin barrier. Only a dermatologist can advise you on which ingredients to use taking into account the other active substances you already apply to your skin.
In case that you decide that tranexamic acid will be the only active ingredient for treating dark spots, do a patch test before as you need to do with any new substance or product you include in your skincare routine.
It can generally be used daily to have better results. Remember, consistency is essential. Nevertheless, if you are a beginner to the use of TXA, start slowly, increase gradually to see how your skin will react to the new ingredient.
Examine the concentration of TXA in the product you want to buy. Start with a lower concentration to give your skin the time to adjust to it. In skincare products are generally used concentrations of 1-3%. Follow religiously the instructions directed by the cosmetic brand.
In case that your skincare consists of other active ingredients as well, use it once per day. Don’t apply all of them in the same routine.
When dealing with the use of powerful ingredients, hydration and nourishment of the skin is fundamental. In addition to this, sun protection is also of primary importance. You can’t fight against dark spots if you don’t protect your skin from sun damage.
As with any active ingredient, its use may have adverse reactions such as irritation (can vary from mild to severe) and skin dryness. Can also have allergic reaction that’s why you should perform a patch test before use.
If you notice dehydration or you feel that your skin barrier is damaged, discontinue the use of TXA and all other powerful ingredients. Your goal is to repair your skin barrier. Here is my post on how to repair your skin barrierhttps://www.christiannak.com/?p=69
You shouldn’t even think for a moment that if you use more active ingredients against dark spots, you will get better and faster results. There is a risk of impairing your skin barrier which means that your skin is not protected any more against external aggressors. Better buy a product that is already formulated, in the labs, with different actives against hyperpigmentation. In case of doubt, consult a dermatologist.
In a nutshell, tranexamic acid may be useful and efficacious in the treatment of hyperpigmentation but my opinion is that you should consult a dermatologist before spending your money on different serums and active ingredients. In case you don’t want to get other treatments suggested by the doctor or you can’t afford them (which is absolutely normal), make it clear from the first moment. Say that you want to try it with the use of cosmetics and the doctor can possible recommend you what could bring optimal results.
