Body exfoliation, if done properly, offers many benefits and should be part of a skincare routine . It can be done in different ways and each woman chooses the one that suits her most. The important is to go from dull to healthy, radiant skin.
What are the benefits
Removes dead cells and improves the skin’s appearance.
Leaves the skin smooth, with a more even tone.
Unclogs pores and prevents ingrown hairs.
Boosts hydration.
Stimulates blood circulation, enhances the lymphatic system.
Let’s see how to say goodbye to dull skin
With a dry brush. Use a natural brush before having shower. You should brush upwards towards your heart. For the arms you also brush towards your armpits. For the belly area, make circular clockwise movements. Try to make gentle motions. When you finish your shower, don’t forget to hydrate your skin. It is alleged to help with the cellulite.
With a scrub. Rinse your body with water. You gently massage in circular motions and then you rinse with lukewarm water again. After the shower, you need to adequately moisturize your body.
With a natural loofah sponge. You apply your shower gel or cream to the sponge and make again circular motions. Don’t forget to wash your loofah sponge and leave to dry preferably outside of the bathroom, in a dry area. This is the way to keep your sponge free of bacteria. Don’t forget to replace it regularly.
The skin after the exfoliating process may be red and irritated. After your bath, pat dry with a towel but don’t rub your skin. Use a moisturizing body lotion, milk or cream and massage into your skin. I would say that a cream or a butter is a better option because of their thicker consistency and their ingredients. Don’t over- exfoliate. During summertime, if you are on holidays, exfoliate in the evening, moisturize your skin and in the morning don’t forget your sunscreen. Avoid prolonged sun exposure.
Don’t exfoliate areas of your body that have cuts, sunburns or wounds. Depending on the method you choose, if you skin is very irritated, even inflamed, don’t exfoliate again until it recovers.
Dry brushing is a cheaper method, you only need to invest on a good wooden brush. It is also environmentally friendly because it is reduced the plastic waste.
Body scrubs, depending on the brand, may be expensive. Avoid using harsh body scrubs. You won’t get better results faster. On the contrary, you can damage your skin barrier. Always read the ingredients list of the scrub you want to buy. Τhere may be an ingredient you are allergic to.
Although I like the use of loofah, it has its downsides. Needs to be washed and very well dried to avoid accumulation of dirt, dead cells and bacteria. Needs to be replaced frequently.
Briefly, body exfoliation is beneficial to the skin but you need to be cautious. The method you will choose, depends on you. You better know what you like to do in order to reveal your glowing skin.
