Salicylic acid belongs to the beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) and it is oil-soluble. This means that it can penetrate the skin and makes it an effective hydroxy-acid for oily and acne-prone skin.
The benefits you get
Exfoliates. It has keratolytic action than makes easier the elimination of dead cells.
Unclogs pores. As an oil-soluble substance can penetrate the skin pores and cleanse them.
Works well with acne. It may take weeks to see positive results. If you have severe acne, you should better consult a dermatologist to prescribe you the appropriate treatment.
Can also regulate the sebum production. Diminishes the amount of oil on the skin’s surface.
Can reduce inflammation caused by blemishes and pimples.
It can be found in many over-the-counter products such as face cleansers, toners, serums and creams in different concentrations.
Concentrations of 0.5-2% may be efficacious. However, if you have sensitive or dry skin, you should start with a lower strength.
The product’s pH is also very important. It must be acidic.
What not to combine with Salicylic Acid
Retinol. They are both exfoliators and applying them in the same routine can cause severe irritation.
Glycolic acid. For the same reason. However, if you still want to combine them, use a pre-formulated product by a cosmetic brand. This could be a safe option unless your skin shows signs of irritation. In this case, discontinue the use.
Benzoyl peroxide (a medication to treat acne). Consult your dermatologist. He may recommend a combination of active substances that you shouldn’t decide by yourself.
Vitamin C. It is better to use them at different times of the day when you are a beginner, if your skin is sensitive or you use a high concentration of Vitamin C. Otherwise, opt for a product that is preformulated in a brand’s laboratories.
Peptides. The acidic pH of the Salicylic Acid may reduce the efficacy of the peptides.
Precautions to take
In case that you include it for the first time in your skincare routine, do a patch test before.
It is generally considered safe. However, if you notice any irritation, reduce the use.
Purging could occur as well. This is absolutely normal because of the way it works. You can always limit the times of use so as to avoid severe purging.
Can be used morning and night. Your skin will be photosensitive due the Salicylic Acid’s exfoliating action. Don’t neglect your broad spectrum sunscreen (SPF50). Reapply it frequently.
In case that you want to continue its use in the summer, apply it at night, reduce the times of use and in the morning apply your sunscreen when you are outdoors or indoors close to a window.
Moisturize adequately your skin. Salicylic acid is an exfoliant and can dehydrate your skin. Protecting your skin barrier is crucial.
Don’t overuse it, thinking that you will get better results in a shorter period of time.
To sum up, salicylic acid is very effective but should be used in moderation to avoid skin dehydration. In case that you decide to include it in your skincare routine, do a patch test first, begin with a lower concentration and don’t use it every day. Give your skin the time adapt to the new active substance. Moisturize well your skin and don’t neglect your sunscreen.
